Lake Vermilion, Minnesota | May, 2016 |

The North American medicinal leech, Macrobdella decora, was originally described from Lake Vermillion in northern Minnesota. In order to tease out the evolutionary relationships of members of the genus Macrobdella, we needed to collect specimens from the type locality, which is why we travelled there in May, 2016. After attempting, in vain, to find the leech the year before, we were incredibly happy to get our hands on some specimens, which wouldn’t have been possible without help from a local leech trapper.
